La Salle Mae Hong Son sees education as one of the pillars that support individual achievement and community sustainability. The establishment of LSMHS aligns with the endeavors of the Thai government and international humanitarian organizations in improving the lives of people in Mae Hong Son and the Northeast Region.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

According to the study published by\u00a0Organisation for Economic\u00a0<\/span>Co-operation and Development published in 2018, while Thailand is revered for its development success stories in moving from a low-income status to an upper-middle-income country over the recent decade, more efforts are needed to reduce the substantial inequality among the regions in the country.<\/span><\/p>

Mae Hong Son, and the Northeast region where it is located, was identified to be the lowest-scored region in the Human Achievement Index based on the National Human Development Report for Thailand in 2007. Education in the region was seen to have the poorest quality among all the sub-indices as well.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

In 2017, a study has shown that only 9% of teachers in Mae Hong Son have a graduate degree in contrast to Bangkok’s degree-holder teachers at 20%. The Thai Government recognizes the room for growth in the country’s educational system, which let to the creation of the 20-year Education Master Plan (2017-2036) to overhaul the current system in accordance with the 20-year National Strategic Plan and Thailand 4.0.\u00a0<\/p>

LSMHS is one with the government in providing accessible education, especially to the Hill Tribe students. Through the assistance of the government and partner organizations, the School aims to admit students under a subsidy program.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

There is unity in diversity.<\/h2>\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Various UN agencies have been collaborating, together with Thai ministries, since 2017 in rolling out development projects for the improvement of the livelihood conditions in Mae Hong Son. The collaboration includes programs on agriculture, small-scale businesses, natural resources management, health, education, legal status, tourism, and many more.<\/p>

One of \u00a0success factor that the collaboration emphasizes is the use of culturally and linguistically appropriate approaches and materials as the organizations recognize the diversity of the population in the province. Over 60% of the people in the province comprise ethnic groups, and among them are Shan, Karen, Hmong, Yao, Lahu and Lisu.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Currently, there is no secondary school present in Khun Mae La Village or in nearby towns in the Mae Hong Son Province. The absence of secondary school in the area forces students to move to another place to continue their educations, while others just decide to stop.<\/p>

One of LSMHS’s dream is to fill that gap in secondary education. With LSMHS, Hill Tribe students will no longer need to move outside of Mae Hong Son to continue studying. This, in turn, leads to maintaining and strengthening the bonds within the family and their community.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

According to the Integrated Livelihood Development and Human Strategy Framework formed in December 2013 by the United Nations Task Force and Provincial Working Group on the United Nations Joint Programme in Mae Hong Son, education serves as a major avenue in implementing development programs for the people in Mae Hong Son. Through education that is designed for the locals, which includes using multi-lingual modality, people can gain awareness on their basic human rights, and empower them to learn and share lifelong learnings.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t
