LEAD Story 395

The Lasallian East Asia District (LEAD) will be having the 4th District Assembly on 2022 December 18-22 (18 and 22 are travel days) in the Philippines.

The objectives of the assembly are the following:

1. Come together as a District to pray and bond fraternally after two years of “lockdown”;
2. Share dreams and hopes of the Brothers for the coming District Chapter and expectations for new leadership; and
3. Review and evaluate the District’s programs for the past 4 years based on a) Progress Report of the Visitor and the Council, b) Sector Report, and c) Community Notes.

On 17 to 18 September and 08 October 2022, sixty-nine (69) Brothers and lay partners from across the seven countries of the Lasallian East Asia District gathered virtually for the 3rd LEAD Mission Assembly. The objective of the gathering was to craft the District’s response to the pathways proposed by the Institute’s 46th General Chapter. The Transformation Pathways and their related commitments were organized under three (3) main themes that were identified as vital discussion points for the gathering: Mission, Formation, and Renewed Structures.

Preparations for this discernment process took a year. The Organizing Committee of the Assembly began preparations in September 2021. By November of last year, the different Sectors came together for their respective Country Conversations, which reflected on the results of the previous Mission Assembly. The realities that emerged from each country during these conversations also figured in the current Mission Assembly.

As the Assembly began, Brother Superior General Br. Armin A. Luistro FSC challenged the participants to express gratitude for the unique context of LEAD; to surrender to divine providence as the work of finding new ways to look after those entrusted to our care carries on; and ask where our brothers and sisters are, ensuring that Lasallians in East Asia will continue to be there for them. Equipped with these invitations and the distinct experience of LEAD from the past four years, participants of the Assembly broke out into discussion circles to give particular attention to the General Chapter resolutions and come up with rooted and contextualized proposals for the Lasallian mission in East Asia. The LEAD Vocations team presented the data gathered from the Vocation Survey to Lasallians in LEAD involved in vocations ministry

Brs. Nico Mariano and Weegee Enriquez, who led the survey and analysis of data, expressed that the study and its results aim to report to the stakeholders (Brothers, Lasallian Partners, etc.) the actual situations and “on the ground conditions related to vocations promotions.”

The overview of the vocations ministry was presented in four sections:

A. Advantageous realities related to Vocations Ministry
B. Concerns related to Vocations Ministry
C. Ministers’ Vision of Vocations Ministry
D. Vocation Promotion Ministers’ Proposed Measures for Support to the District.

Twenty-two participants from almost all sectors shared their reflections on the survey results. The report and comments will be used in the 4th LEAD Brothers Assembly in December 2022.

Currently the Brother on Scholarship at SMC is Br. Iñigo Riola who recently passed his comprehensive exams and is one step closer to his PhD.

PHILIPPINES - Thank you for accompanying us through your prayers during the 1st Discernment Retreat for the year, offered to the Aspirants of the De La Salle Brothers. The whole retreat aimed to encourage our Aspirants to trust the discernment process and to look at the various experiences that may help deepen their understanding of God's invitation and their willingness to respond to God's love.

The retreat was crafted based on the Pilgrim's Handbook of 2019, and centered on the parable of the Pearl of Great Price. Sessions supported the theme by providing experiences and conversations that share and clarify the innermost dynamics related to the discernment of God's presence in one's life and the invitation to share oneself with society.

Special thanks to our Brothers from the La Salle Bacolod Brothers' Community for generously sharing their home with our Aspirants and for giving their time to facilitate some of the sessions. We also thank Brothers Vic and Marvin for coming over and sharing themselves through their respective sessions.

This retreat is the first of three discernment retreats offered to our Aspirants who are willing to dive deeper into the process of discernment towards the life of the De La Salle Brothers.

JAPAN - La Salle won the top prize in both the junior high and high school divisions.

In the junior high school division, Mr. Adachi, a junior at La Salle Junior High School, gave a presentation on "Global Energy Issues.

In the high school division, La Salle Mission club students presented "Think Globally Act Locally (Toward the realization of multicultural conviviality)”.

Mr. Ishimaru, Director of JICA Hokkaido, an alumnus of Hakodate La Salle, came as a judge.

We hope that the students will be able to apply what they discussed in their presentations in the real world. We have high expectations for them.

PHILIPPINES - Eleven De La Salle University faculty researchers are included in the 2022 list of the world's top 2% researchers across all disciplines, in a paper published by a team led by Stanford University statistician John loannidis (https://elsevier.digitalcommonsdata.com/datasets/btchxktzyw).

The list includes approximately 200,000 scholars from all over the world.

Four faculty members are included in the list of top researchers based on cumulative career statistics. They are Prof. Raymond Tan, Prof. Luis Razon, Prof. Kathleen Aviso, and Prof. Consolacion Ragasa†. There are a total of 32 locally-based researchers listed, but only 13 from HEIs.

Ten DLSU faculty members are among the world’s leading researchers based on 2021 statistics. They are Prof. Raymond Tan, Prof. Allan BI Bernardo, Prof. Anthony SF Chiu, Prof. Kathleen Aviso, Prof. Aristotle Ubando, Prof. Luis Razon, Prof. Michael Promentilla, Prof. Elmer Dadios, Prof. Fides del Castillo, and Dr. Ronnie Concepcion. The listing includes 41 locals with 23 from HEIs.

HONG KONG - The 90th Anniversary Cross Harbour Swimming Gala was held this morning as part of the New World Harbour Race 2022. Seven Old Boys and 3 students braved the cold, early swim across the Harbour.

Br Thomas, Mr Ronnie Wong, Mr David Mong and Dr Jimmy Wong were granted the honour of firing the starting pistol for our heat.

PHILIPPINES - For the fifth straight year, De La Salle University is among the world’s top universities according to the 2023 edition of the Times Higher Education World University Rankings. It retains its last year’s standing in the 1,201-1,500 bracket.

The rankings evaluate research-intensive HEIs across all their core functions including teaching, research, knowledge transfer, and international outlook.

This year, 1,799 institutions, or about six percent of over 26,000 HEIs in the world, met the criteria to be included in the rankings.

Vice President for Research and Innovation Dr. Raymond Tan stated that DLSU’s consistent inclusion in the rankings shows the University’s commitment as a leading resource for research and development.

“We will continue to contribute to national development through our R&D, because we firmly believe that new knowledge will be the basis for new solutions to deal with future challenges.”
